Front Row Seat To The Grammys!
Yes, I had a front row seat to the Grammy’s last night! Right in my own family room, swinging from my hanging hammock chair in the corner! I’m sure it would be amazing to actually be there, but I was quite satisfied from my comfortable spot, cuddled up, legs stretched out, just “hanging out”.
I am always amazed by the talent that is in this world. These people are truly blessed with gifts to share with the rest of the world. It was a cold, windy night here outside, and I couldn’t think of anywhere I would rather be than in my new KW hammock chair!
The Green Eggs and Hammocks trailer hitch stand is the perfect Valentine’s gift for the outdoors man in your life! He will love you forever if you get him the unique stand to hook onto the trailer hitch of his SUV or truck.
He can then place hammock chairs on the arms so that you could even join him on a picnic, by the lake, some warm afternoon this spring. You can sit and swing, while looking out over the beautiful water. It will be a perfect afternoon! There is even a canopy to keep you shaded or free from rain.
As we are exploring many ways to beat the winter blues, as we call the slightly sad we feeling that some of get in the winter, when the days are shorter and it is cold outside, and sometimes cloudy. This is not be confused with a clinical depression, of course, which may require medication. One of my favorite things to do anytime of year is to read. This is an enjoyable way to pass a gloomy day.
I do recommend though, if you are reading to lift your spirits, don’t read a book that makes you cry! Find a book that is uplifting, or even funny. Winter is a great time to catch up on the piles of magazines that lay around unread. I like to put my subscriptions in a binder that holds a whole year of issues. Then I can read them when I find time. I keep them in the corner bookcase by my hammock chair stand so that I can just reach for one and browse. If you don’t feel you have time for a whole book, you may enjoy short stories, such as the Chicken Soup series. There are so many of them now, and the stories in each book are short reads, and very uplifting.
As some of us, myself included is just getting through the winter months here, I am offering some suggestions to help brighten a gloomy day. Isn’t the sun brilliant and beautiful on a cold winter’s day? It seems more clear than any other season. The problem is when we get none of those great rays, and it is cold!
Yesterday, I mentioned bright colors. Today, I am recommending scents, aromatherapy, for another word. This is a whole topic, large enough for a book! But since this is a blog, I will just mention that using scents that are pleasing to us and can lift our spirits. The easiest way is probably a candle, as the flame is a small, warm light, which brings us peace. Another way are the ever popular reed diffusers. I have a beautiful, ocean scent on the bookcase right beside my hammock chair stand, so that when I sit there to read, I get a nice whiff. Then there are electric diffusers for essential oils, some with mist and lights. Just choose what will work best for you, or a combination.
While we are discussing resolutions, one of the most popular ones is exercise. This doesn’t mean you need a gym membership, if that doesn’t suit you or isn’t in your budget. There is a simple exercise you can do anywhere without any equipment, except a good pair of sneakers.
Walking! It is the best and safest exercise there is. It allows you to start at your own comfort level, and then increase gradually, as you become stronger. Even ten minutes every day is better than nothing at all! It also adds up to seventy minutes in a week! It will also make you appreciate a nice rest when you are finished. Maybe you are lucky enough to have a hanging hammock chair to lounge in as a reward!
As I mentioned yesterday, the greatest way to relax is in a hammock chair. In my opinion, this is the best relaxation, and a hammock swing is small enough to fit in any room of your house. It is perfect in any corner of a room. It can be hung from the ceiling or hung from a hammock chair stand.
The whole family could benefit from one. Teenagers seem to enjoy them in their bedrooms. But, of course, then you would need one for yourself! You will discover a peaceful feeling when lightly swaying in your hanging chair. You could spend a few minutes or a few hours every day! You will soon discover that you are a calmer, happier person, just by doing this!
I went to the gym this morning, as I regularly do. I always am amazed at how many more people are there in the beginning of January. I think that is great, because many people have a New Year’s resolution to get in shape, be healthier, lose weight, etc. But, did you know there is actually an easier way to be healthier?
It does not require hard work and caloric restriction, either! It is to reduce stress and relax more. Don’t get me wrong, exercise, in moderation, is a wonderful thing to do for overall well-being, physical, and mental health. But reducing stress is just as important. Stress is a sneaky killer, because it disguises itself in all kinds of diseases. We need to decrease some of the work load that we put upon ourselves. Let us take a look at what is necessary and what just decreases the quality of our lives. The best thing you can do about starting this resolution to relax regularly is to invest in a hammock chair. You will thank yourself every day!
When I am out Christmas shopping, it seems to make me so hungry! Often, the choices of food that are available and quick are fast food restaurants or hot dog and pretzel shops. I have found that if I make a healthy smoothie before I go out, then have healthy snacks in my car or purse, like nuts, dried fruit, etc, I am less apt to go for the unhealthy stuff out of desperation! Try this smoothie for yourself:
Ingredients
1 cup strawberries, hulled
1/3 cup frozen blueberries
2 bananas, peeled and cut into chunks
1/2 cup orange juice
1 1/2 cups plain yogurt
1 tablespoon soy milk powder
Directions
Combine strawberries, blueberries, bananas, orange juice, yogurt, and soy milk powder in a blender. Blend until smooth, then pour into glasses and serve.
I have a short rest period in my hammock swing, while drinking my smoothie and get myself in the right state of mind for Christmas shopping!
Parties! Parties and family gatherings are so much fun with all of that food! However, you really don’t want to increase a pants size by next year! So, here are some tips for enjoying the food, yet in moderation. I think moderation is the key to life. Too much of anything is…well, it’s just too much!
So, how about having a healthy snack before you get to the party so that you don’t arrived famished and wanting to eat everything in sight! Also, drink a large glass of water first, too. Do not rush to the buffet line first, engage in conversation with someone. Then, when you do get there, go ahead and choose some favorites, along with some healthy choices, just take a small portion. Then, when you eat it, eat slowly, and truly enjoy the flavors, without feeling guilty. Focus on the enjoyment of the moment. When you get home, relax in your “quiet place”, whether it be a hanging hammock chair, like mine, or your favorite chair, and relieve the events of the party and feel blessed you have people that love you!a
Since I am, after all, the Healthy Hammock Lady, I thought it would be an appropriate time to talk about health over the holidays. Maintaining our current good health, or striving for better health. Did you know that the single worst thing for your health is stress? We all know what that is, and I feel it is multiplied at this time of year, because we put so many expectations on ourselves!
So, how we can help this? First of all, stop, and remember the reason that you celebrate the holidays. Stop putting all of these unrealistic expectations on yourself! Does it really matter if you don’t bake cookies for the whole neighborhood? You may be juggling a family, job, etc. Couldn’t you surprise them with a plate of cookies in January, when they aren’t being bombarded with everyone else’s baked gifts? They may appreciate it more then. This will alleviate some items on your “to do” list! First, we need to find our “quiet place” daily and spend a few minutes there. For me, this is an Algoma Hammocks hammock chair in the corner of my sun room. But find your spot and go there, then truly evaluate what is really a priority to you so that you can cut out some of this stress!
